As Hillary Clinton's campaign circles the drain, the Democrats are panicking. Who can blame them? Their heir apparent is dropping in the polls, having stilted and awkward interactions with "everyday Americans," and is now also under federal investigation - for behavior that is looking shadier with every new bit of info we find out.
The GOP has nearly twenty candidates to choose from. Not all of them are good (I'm thinking of a name that rhymes with Ronald Frump) but they are viable - as in, they don't belong in jail for deliberately not protecting national security information and then lying about it for the better part of a year. Hillary's understudy, on the other hand, is a socialist folk musician. Yikes.
So, the left needs a new candidate - and fast. Their most obvious pick was Joe Biden. He's already nationally known, and generally well-liked, with lots of experience as a Senator and then as VP. Do I want to see a Biden campaign? Hellz yeah I do. The man is a smart person, I'm sure, but also a walking gaffe machine. Plus, the Clinton vs. Biden infighting would be a soap opera...you saw how dirty she played against Obama in '08 with the whole birther thing, just watch her turn up the heat this time around. It'd be fascinating but also horrific...so, just like most reality television.
With no Biden candidacy yet, the Dems looked at another VP: Al Gore. Gore has been out of the public eye for a while. He's known mostly for the go-green movement, which people definitely care about and rally behind, but I have never heard of anyone who is a single-issue voter on the environment. Gore also tried running for president in 1988. Before I was born. So if he runs again, the Democratic Party WINS ThrowbackThursday or FlashbackFriday or whatever it is called these days.
There's also rumblings of getting California Governor Jerry Brown to run. Brown is popular in California, but a lot of things are popular in California. The state's main renewable resource is popularity. California isn't exactly a model of great government, what with their huge debt and messy, bureaucratic education system and high taxes and the list goes on. The biggest deterrent to a Jerry Brown candidacy, though, is that the man is 77 years old. He's got a decade on Hillary AND on Al Gore. May we all be so fortunate as to have the energy to govern a state at that age, but may we also have the option to not work that hard at that age, ya know?
As the truth starts coming out and Hillary starts looking worse, the Democrats will rally around a backup plan...or two, or three. Any one of them would make the race interesting - so, who's it going to be?
